2007 NC ACS Local Section Distinguished Lecturer Award Recipient Announced

The North Carolina Section of the American Chemical Society is proud to announce our 2007 Distinguished Lecturer Award recipient: Dr. Alan E. (Al) Tonelli, INVISTA Professor of Fiber and Polymer Chemistry at North Carolina State University (NC State).

Al received his Ph.D. in Chemistry under the supervision of Nobel Laureate Paul Flory and joined the staff of AT&T-Bell Labs, where he made significant contributions to the analysis of polymer microstructures by NMR spectroscopy. These were summarized in his book, NMR Spectroscopy and Polymer Microstructure: The Conformational Connection (Wiley-Interscience, NY, 1989), the same year he was elected Fellow of the American Physical Society.

After 23 years at Bell, Al joined the faculty of NC State to continue his research efforts and begin educating a new generation of scientists in the area of fibers and polymers. To assist in all of this, a second book, Polymers from the Inside Out: An Introduction to Macromolecules (Wiley, NY 2001), was published. In addition, he has 300 publications, several book chapters, and numerous invited seminars in his extensive resume. He has supervised the research programs of over 30 undergraduates, 20 graduate, and 7 post-doctoral students. He also has worked with several high school students as part of the NC Local Section's Project SEED program.

In addition to all of this, Al has found time for many other activities, including serving on the editorial boards of Macromolecules and Computational and Theoretical Polymer Science. His activities in the ACS are many, including being a tour speaker and chairing the Polymer Topical Groups in both New Jersey and North Carolina. Alan also organized and chaired a Symposium for SERMACS 2004, has been an Alternate Councilor, Chair-elect (chairing the 2006 Local Section Meeting), and is the current chair of the NC Local Section.

The 12th annual Richard D. Gilbert Awards in Polymer Science were presented at the Richard D. Gilbert Polymer Science Symposium held in March at North Carolina State University (NCSU) in Raleigh. The awards, funded by Lord Corporation, are meant to encourage excellence in polymer science and engineering.

The first-place award, a commemorative certificate and $500, was awarded to Ravi Shankar from NCSU for "Ultrahigh Actuation Strain of Novel Nanostructured Polymer Systems" (Advisor: Richard Spontak and Tushar Ghosh). The second-place award, a commemorative certificate and $400, was awarded to Arif Gozen from NCSU for "Patterning of Microgel Particles on Polymer Surfaces Controlled by Autophobicity and Interfacial Tension" (Advisor: Jan Genzer and Richard Spontak). The third-place award, a commemorative certificate and $300, was awarded to Jinmei Du for "Porous Hybrid Electrolytes for High-temperature Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells" (Advisor: Xiangwu Zhang). The poster prize, a commemorative certificate and $200, was awarded to Young Jhon from NCSU for "Adsorption kinetics of random copolymers with tunable monomer sequences onto flat surfaces" (Advisor: Jan Genzer).

The Symposium and awards are named after Richard D. Gilbert, a founding member of the ACS North Carolina Section Polymer Discussion Group, which sponsored and hosted the Symposium. This was the first Symposium since the passing of Professor Gilbert. Professor Ray Fornes made a statement about Professor Gilbert's contribution to the development of a polymer science program at NCSU. Students and recent graduates in the Research Triangle Park region of North Carolina are eligible to be nominated for the awards. Contact Russell Gorga ( for more information.

Additionally, the scholarship winners and their advisors will be invited to dinner and networking with the NC ACS Local Section Executive Committee Members. The scholarship grant becomes available for work beginning as early as the summer of 2007 and expires before the start of the fall semester 2008.

We are proud to announce the selection of John Miller and Andy Freeman as recipients of the Technical Achievements Award in Organic Chemistry (TAOC), administered by the American Chemical Society. John and Andy are among only 10 individuals nationwide selected to receive this honor and they will present some of their research at the annual TAOC Award Symposium during the 234th American Chemical Society National meeting in Boston in August, 2007. The TAOC award recognizes outstanding contributions of chemists with Bachelor or Master of Science degrees in the field of Organic Chemistry.

John and Andy are recognized by the selection committee for their long-term and highly impactful contributions to drug discovery at GlaxoSmithKline and its legacy organizations. Both work in Infectious Disease Medicinal Chemistry here in RTP. Both have an extensive track record of accomplishments, particularly in the antiviral area, and have been involved in the discovery and progression of multiple compounds into clinical development. John and Andy have presented invited lectures at many scientific meetings and local/regional universities and are widely published in the patent and scientific literature.
