REMARKS FROM THE INCOMING 2010 CHAIR

As I look to the schedule of events for 2010 for our Local NC ACS section, I think, no problem. We can do it. There's a career development meeting for the Women Chemists Committee in February. In March, there are plans for a Science Café focused on wine, with some tasting, of course. The Triangle Magnetic Resonance (TriMR) discussion group is planning a day long meeting at the high field NMR facility at the David H. Murdock Research Institute on the North Carolina Research Campus in Kannapolis. The Triangle Chromatography Discussion Group is hosting the annual symposium and exhibit in May. We will continue the Project SEED research awards, providing opportunities for high school students to conduct summer research. We have our Local Section meeting in September. We will host a booth at the NC State Fair in October. Just a few events and programs spread throughout the year.

However, a closer look reveals a different insight. We will send councilors to the Spring and Fall ACS meetings. The Triangle Area Mass Spectroscopy (TAMS) discussion group will host a number of presentations and meetings this year. The Polymer Discussion group has plans for monthly meetings. The Undergraduate Student Research scholarships will be selected and awarded. The TarHelium newsletter will be available on the new website. We are also continuing plans for the 2012 SERMACS meeting- location, symposium, poster sessions, exhibit, etc. We hope to host 1500+ attendees from the Southeastern Region.

I probably forgot something… NC ACS event at the museum, Earth Day, National Chemistry Week, preparations for the International Year of Chemistry in 2011.

We are grateful the Hamner Institute will continue to let the Executive Committee meet in one of their conference rooms. Let me know if you'd like to meet with us (the first Wednesday of each month).

REMARKS FROM THE OUTGOING 2009 CHAIR

Although I have been involved with the NC ACS for many years through such functions as the Undergraduate Student Research Scholarship program, the planning of SERMACS 1998 and 2004, and the Triangle Chromatography Discussion Group; none prepared me for the breadth of functions and events that make up the NC ACS section agenda each year. Only with a core of tireless volunteers and individuals who contribute in many ways during the year has it been possible for this ACS section to be as active as I have found it to be. It has been both an eye-opening experience and a privilege to be a part of this as the 2009 Chair. I am certain that the in-coming 2010 Chair, Marc ter Horst, and our new Chair-elect, Ken Tomer, will find the group ready for greater achievements in 2010.

Some of the many highlights and activities of this past year have included:

  • The fully-electronic TarHelium has continued to mature both in style and content to become a ready-reference to all Section activities and achievements thanks to the significant efforts of Nicolle Tulve (Editor) and Judi Price (Copy Editor).

  • Our Section web site has been moved to a new ACS-provided host with a radically different format and application tools thanks to great personal effort by our Webmaster, Melinda Box. In the new Section web site, http://ncacs.sites.acs.org/, Melinda captured all of our previous content and began adding new capabilities for membership info, social networking, FAQ, photo gallery and much more.

  • The WCC (Women Chemists Committee) has continued to increase its activities through joint functions and connections with students and professionals thanks to the efforts of Laura Sremaniak and Melissa Pasquinelli.

  • The efforts of Bill Switzer and Sol Levine, along with their army of volunteers, once again demonstrated the popularity of the NC ACS State Fair exhibit through the magic and fun of their Stage Shows.

  • Under Ken Cutler's guidance and efforts, the NC ACS Project SEED again ranked as one of the top SEED programs in the nation with over 40 mentors located in 7 institutions to work with 35 SEED students.

  • The Undergraduate Student Research scholarship was entirely redesigned by Keith Levine this year which resulted in the award of 3 scholarships valued at $4,000 each by our NC ACS Section. Two of the scholarships were named for individuals who were significant contributors to the NC ACS Section, Dr. Ernst Eliel and Mr. Howard James. The Howard James scholarship is also supported in part by the Triangle Chromatography Discussion Group which has been a long-time supporter of the NC ACS scholarship program.

  • The 123rd Section Conference, which changed its format in 2008, was even more successful in its focus greater attendance and poster participation this past Fall.

  • The NC ACS Section was again well represented in the 2009 Chemistry Olympiad thanks to the efforts of Myra Halpin. Myra was also the recipient of the 2009 Marcus Hobbs Service Award for her active support of our Local Section.

  • The Section hosted 2 ACS Tour Speakers, "Astrochemistry: What's New in the Field of Astrochemistry?" presented by Dr. Yorke Rhodes in January, and "Chocolate: Food of the Gods" presented by Dr. Howard Peters in February; both as dinner meetings in the RTP.

  • With the NC ACS accepted by the National ACS as the host for the 2012 SERMACS, Charlie Goss, General SERM Chair, began the long process of site selection, business development, and program planning. A core group of volunteers was identified to handle many of the event functions but many more are needed in the coming year.

Section members have been involved in many more activities than have been named above and my thanks and gratitude goes out to all of them. The NC ACS Section could not be as successful and active without everyone's contribution. It's been quite a ride!


LOCAL ELECTION RESULTS

Chair-Elect

    Ken Tomer

    Kenneth Tomer is a Principal Investigator at NIEHS and is head of the Mass Spectrometry Workgroup in the Laboratory of Structural Biology. He received his B.S. degree in chemistry from Ohio State University in 1966 and his Ph.D. in organic chemistry from the University of Colorado in 1970. After one year of postdoctoral study at the H.C. Ørsted Institute (University of Copenhagen) and Stanford University (with Carl Djerassi), he held positions as Assistant Professor of chemistry (Brooklyn College/City University of New York) and Research Assistant Professor (University of Pennsylvania Medical School) before joining RTI from 1977-1981. From 1981 to 1986, Ken was Assistant/Associate Director of the Midwest Center for Mass Spectrometry and Associate Research Professor at the University of Nebraska. In 1986, he joined NIEHS as a Senior Investigator. In addition to his current position at NIEHS, he is an Adjunct Professor in the Oral Biology Program of the UNC School of Dentistry and has held visiting positions at Konstanz University in Germany and the University of Aveiro in Portugal.

    Ken has served the North Carolina Section of the American Chemical Society as an Alternate Councilor since 2005. He was program co-chair of the recent Section Fall Section Meeting and is Program Chair for the 2012 Southeast Regional ACS Meeting. For the 2004 Southeast Regional ACS meeting, he organized the symposium 'Protein Characterization by Mass Spectrometry'. He also served as a co-chair of the Triangle Area Mass Spectrometry (TAMS) Discussion Group from 1988 2005.

    Ken's research interests are focused on the application of mass spectrometry to structural studies of proteins and protein interactions, especially to determination of epitopes on antigens from infectious agents that are recognized by neutralizing antibodies. He has co-authored approximately 300 publications and served on the editorial boards of Biological Mass Spectrometry, Journal of the American Society for Mass Spectrometry, Journal of Capillary Electrophoresis and Biomolecular Engineering.

Secretary

    Melissa Pasquinelli

    Dr. Melissa Pasquinelli's research expertise is in the design and application of computational approaches that predict and modulate the properties of polymers, proteins, carbon-based nanostructures, and fibers. In addition, she is working on methods to predict the potential adverse health effects of nanotechnologies.

    Prior to joining NC State, Dr. Pasquinelli worked for two years as a Computational Chemist with the Office of Research and Development at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in Research Triangle Park, where her research focused on the development of molecular modeling techniques to address problems in risk assessment. While at the EPA, she designed computational strategies for high-throughput evaluation of chemical toxicity of environmental chemicals, such as the impact of endocrine disrupting compounds on human health. She received postdoctoral training at Duke University, where she developed computational tools for predicting electron transfer rates in dynamically modified protein complexes, and was awarded a prestigious postdoctoral fellowship from the Sloan Foundation for this work.

    In 2002, she received her Ph.D. in theoretical chemistry from Carnegie Mellon University. Her thesis research explored structure-property relationships for conjugated polymers, and she devised an effective particle model that embodies the relevant photophysics for the design of devices made from these organic semiconductors. She received her B.S. in chemistry with honors in 1996 from Seton Hill University in Greensburg, PA. She is originally from Saint Marys, PA, which is near the beautiful Allegheny National Forest. In her spare time, Dr. Pasquinelli enjoys exploring the outdoors; playing cards; listening to music; practicing yoga/pilates; doing community outreach; and spending time with her family, friends, and pets.

Councilor

    Al Crumbliss

    Alvin L. Crumbliss is currently the Bishop-MacDermott Family Professor of Chemistry and Dean of the Natural Sciences at Duke University. While at Duke he received the David and Janet Vaughn Brooks Distinguished Undergraduate Teaching Award, the Duke University Scholar/Teacher of the Year Award and the Dean's Distinguished Service Award. He received the Hobbs Award from the NC Section of the American Chemical Society in 2003.

    Al earned his A.B. from Knox College and received a Distinguished Alumni Achievement Award in 2005. He received his Ph.D. from Northwestern University, and was a Postdoctoral Associate at the University of Southern California. Al is the recipient of fellowships from the NIH and NATO, and held the French Academy of Sciences/Elf-Aquitaine Chemistry Chair in Strasbourg, France in 1995. He has lectured extensively in Europe and has held visiting faculty positions in Paris, Grenoble, Strasbourg and Oxford. Al is a bio-inorganic chemist with over 200 journals and monograph publications.

    Richard Palmer

    Dr. Richard A. Palmer has served the NC Section of the ACS in some capacity almost continuously since the mid 1960's. His activities have included:

    He has also served at the National ACS level, first in 1968 on the Initial Task Force that established Project SEED through the Subcommittee on the Education and Employment of the Disadvantaged. From 1990-present, he has represented the NC Section on the National Council. From 1999-2005 he served on the Joint Board-Council Committee on International Activities and now serves on the Council Committee on Meetings and Expositions.

    Although not directly related to ACS Local Section Activities, Richard has served other societies in a variety of capacities also. These include the Coblentz Society from 1992-96 on the Board of Managers, in 1997 as the Williams-Wright Symposium Chairman and in 1999-2001 on the Meggers Award Committee. He also served as President of the Duke Chapter of Sigma Xi from 1988-89, coordinating the successful bid for relocating the National Headquarters to RTP. From 1990-present, he served on the Editorial Board of Applied Spectroscopy. From 1999-2001 he served on the Lippincott Award Committee and from 2000-2001, he was chairman of the Nominations Committee both for the Society of Applied Spectroscopy. He was Chair and Host of AIRS II (Second International Symposium on Advanced Infrared Spectroscopy), Durham, NC in 1996, served on the International Advisory Committee for AIRS III, Vienna, Austria, 1998, was chair of the International Steering Committee, ICAVS I (First International Conference on Advanced Vibrational Spectroscopy), Turku, Finland, 2001, served on the International Steering Committee, 2D COS, Sanda (Osaka), 1999 and served on the Program Committee, FACSS, 1998, 1999, 2000.

    Teaching:

    While at Duke he has taught undergraduate courses in General, Physical, Analytical and Advanced Inorganic Chemistry and graduate courses in Inorganic Chemistry and Group Theory. Currently he directs a cluster of freshman seminars, "The Faces of Science" in The Focus Program and teaches a course in that cluster, "The Drama of Science". He has supervised 29 PhD dissertations and 8 Masters Theses and mentored 36 undergraduate senior thesis students and 10 postdoctoral associates.

    Research Interests:

    Recent and current research projects include work in the following areas: Time-resolved Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy in the microsecond to picosecond regime of transient photo-excited states in transition metal compounds and bio-molecules, dynamic infrared opto-rheology of organic polymers, infrared photoacoustic spectral depth profiling, the use of synchrotron radiation for time-resolved infrared spectroscopy and studies of the ablation mechanisms of the Er:YAG laser in the cleaning and restoration of two- and three-dimensional works of art.

    He is the coauthor (with W. E. Hatfield) of "Problems in Structural Inorganic Chemistry," W. A. Benjamin, 1971, and of over 140 peer reviewed research publications.

Alternate Councilor

    Dorian Canelas

    Dorian is currently teaching General and Organic Chemistry at Duke University. Her experience with the Local Section dates back to 1994, when she started attending the Local ACS Polymer Group meetings. Since then, she has served as Treasurer, Program Chair, and, finally, Chair of the Local Polymer Discussion Group. Upon completion of her Ph.D., Dorian worked in industry for more than five years at Lord Corporation on long-term research projects developing new materials for microelectronics and industrial applications. Upon switching into academia, she was a Lecturer for three years at NC State University, and conducted research on drug delivery at UNC.

    Ken Lyle

    Kenneth Lyle is employed by Duke University working in the Department of Chemistry as an instructor, as the lecture-demonstrator, and as the Chemistry Outreach Coordinator. Ken earned his BS degree in Education from the University of Tulsa (1971). He was employed as a high school chemistry teacher by the Houston Independent School District. He served in this position for 22 years. During this time he also completed his Masters of Education at the University of Houston (1977). Ken then continued his high school teaching career at St. John's School, Houston (7 years). In 2000, Ken left teaching to work on his Doctorate Degree in Chemistry at Purdue University and was awarded his PhD in July 2005. Ken has received recognition for his contributions to teaching and to chemical education at the local, state, regional, and national levels. Ken has also held several leadership positions over the years and is currently the alternate counselor for the North Carolina Section of the ACS.

The Executive Committee invites all NC ACS members to nominate worthy individuals for the MARCUS E. HOBBS SERVICE AWARD and the NC ACS DISTINGUISHED LECTURER AWARD. Descriptions of these awards are listed below. Both awards will be presented at the 2010 NC ACS Local Section Dinner Meeting in the fall.

Nomination packages should be forwarded to Dr. Al Tonelli at the contact information listed at the end of this article. The nomination deadline for both awards is MAY 1, 2010.

    The Marcus E. Hobbs Service Award was established in 1988 to recognize members who have made significant, long-term contributions to the North Carolina Section of the American Chemical Society. The award was named for Marcus E. Hobbs, Department of Chemistry, Duke University, a model member who worked closely with the North Carolina Section since serving as Chair in 1945. CALL FOR 2010 NC ACS UNDERGRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATIONS

The North Carolina Section of the ACS (NC ACS) is pleased to announce its annual call for undergraduate scholarship applications. Up to three scholarships of $4,000 each may be awarded to undergraduate students who will actively be conducting research in the chemical sciences. The decisions to award one or more scholarships, and the amount(s) of these scholarships, are within the sole discretion of the Executive Committee of the NC ACS. Two of the scholarships will be named in honor of distinguished NC ACS members, Dr. Ernest Eliel and Mr. Howie James.

Dr. Ernest Eliel
Mr. Howie James

Dr. Eliel was a W. R. Kenan Jr. Professor of Chemistry at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill and was a central figure in the field of stereochemistry. Some of his many awards, accomplishments, and recognitions, include being a member of the National Academy of Sciences, a Guggenheim Fellow, and receiving the Lavoisier Medal of the Chemical Society of France. He served as President of the American Chemical Society, and received its highest recognition, the Priestley Medal, in 1995.

Mr. Howie James was an Executive Technical Sales Representative with the Waters Corporation and a long standing member of the Triangle Chromatography Discussion Group (TCDG). He was very active in planning and executing TCDG workshops, seminars, and the annual Triangle Symposium and Instrument Exhibit.

Additional details and eligibility criteria for the undergraduate scholarships are presented below. If you have any questions concerning the application instructions or requirements, please contact Keith Levine (levine@rti.org).

How to Apply:

  • To be considered for a scholarship, the student must be an undergraduate attending and conducting research at a university within the Local Section. Applications from outside of the NC ACS geographical area will not be considered.

  • Applications must be submitted online: http://www.ncsu.edu/ncsu/chemistry/outreach/ACSnc/application_scholarship.html

  • In addition to the application, a letter of recommendation from the student's research advisor must be sent as an e-mail attachment to the scholarship committee chair: levine@rti.org.

  • To be considered, applications must be submitted by April 2, 2010.

  • Applicants are not required to be ACS members.

  • All applicants will be notified by e-mail about the status of their application by May 3, 2010. The NC ACS will begin distributing awards on May 7, 2010.
Award Details and Requirements:

  • Award recipients will be required to present their research findings at an NC ACS Conference, TCDG Conference, an ACS regional or national meeting, or a similar venue.

  • Award funds will be distributed in two payments. The first payment ($3,500) will be sent to the academic department where the student is conducting research. These funds can only be used by the student or the student's advisor to pay for reagents, instrument components or labware, copies, books, software, student travel costs for presentation of scholarship-funded research results, and the student's research salary.

  • The second payment ($500) will be presented directly to the student upon completion of a presentation of research findings at one of the above described venues.

  • As part of the scholarship, all award recipients will be presented with an ACS student affiliate membership.

SERMACS 2012 LOGO CONTEST WINNER

Congratulations to Laura Moussa for submitting the winning entry to the logo design contest! As the winner, she will receive a $100 gift card and a fully paid registration to SERMACS 2012. Laura recently received her Ph.D. in Chemistry from Duke University, where she researched Boranophosphate siRNA in the laboratory of Professor Barbara Ramsey Shaw (congratulations on that as well!).

Laura is now a Managing Editor at American Journal Experts (AJE, http://www.journalexperts.com). AJE is a company that provides language services, including editing, translation, and content review, to authors to facilitate publishing in academic journals.

STATE FAIR ROUNDUP

For 11 of the last 13 years, the NC Section has exhibited at the NC State Fair in October. For the second year, we exhibited in the Green NC Exhibit. Over 70 different volunteers from 21 institutions worked 172 four and a half hour shifts. I think that it was hard to tell who was having more fun, the volunteers or the fair goers.

  

We did approximately 40 stage shows in addition to the continuous activities in the exhibit booth from 9:00 a.m. until 9:45 p.m. all 10 full days of the fair and from 3:00 p.m. until 9:45 p.m. on the opening day. Once again the Local Section officers and exhibit organizers want to thank the many volunteers who helped with the event. Consider volunteering next year and at least visit the booth to see what we do if you are unable to volunteer.

Thank you volunteers!!! You are what makes our exhibit at the State Fair a success!



NATIONAL CHEMISTRY WEEK AT THE NC MUSEUM OF NATURAL SCIENCES

On Saturday, October 17th, the Local Section teamed with staff at the NC Museum of Natural Sciences to provide a day of educational activities in celebration of National Chemistry Week (NCW). Chemistry stage shows and hands-on experiments at this outreach event were related to the 2009 theme, "Chemistry-It's Elemental!" and included activities such as painting with acid-base indicators, polymers, weather, and pharmacy. Dr. Meredith Storms (UNCP) once again served the Local Section as the NCW event coordinator. She and her team of volunteers received many positive comments from the many people who visited the Museum during the event.

We appreciate all of the ACS volunteers and staff from the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences for making this outreach event a success!

NEW NC ACS WEBSITE

The new website will have all the old content plus some new features. These will include an interactive calendar that provides section members the opportunity to post their own events, a photo gallery that will illustrate the section's past and present activities, a forum where section members can post local job announcements, and, eventually, on-line forms to facilitate event registration and volunteer coordination. The new site is almost ready. There are just a few things left to add, among them the TarHelium with newly digitized back issues to make our archive complete! The new address is http://ncacs.sites.acs.org/. Currently both sites are live, but at the end of October we will make the switch to the new site. The NC ACS Local Section is seeking a highly motivated individual to serve as the next TarHelium editor. The current TarHelium editor will be retiring in the Spring, 2010 at the completion of Issue 4, Volume 40. Currently, four issues of the TarHelium are published each academic calendar.

Duties include:

  • Organizing materials for each issue.
  • Writing and editing articles.
  • Seeking contributed articles from professionals in the Local Section area.
  • Working with a copy editor for preparation of each issue.
  • Announcing the issue using the list serve.
  • Attending monthly Local Section Executive Committee meetings. The TarHelium editor has a vote on the Committee.
